Megabus.com erasing holiday traffic by taking over 90,000 cars off the road

-    Placed end-to-end, removed cars would extend more than 230 miles, or distance from New York City to Washington D.C.
-    More than 240,000 customers expected to travel to more than 120 cities across North America on megabus.com

(December 23, 2014) Megabus.com, the popular city-to-city, express bus company, announced today it will be easing traffic patterns for holiday motorists by removing more than 90,000 cars thanks to an ever-increasing number of travelers migrating to the bus.

With the AAA estimating that 98.6 million Americans will travel for 50 or more miles during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the highest volume of travel since the AAA started keeping records in 2001, megabus.com will be reducing the stress of travel for those on the road – by decreasing the volume of vehicles – and also for those who decide to bypass the hassle altogether and leave the driving up to a professional.

“Our studies have shown that approximately 30 out of 81 people on each bus would likely have driven their automobiles but selected to travel by bus instead,” said Mike Alvich, megabus.com Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations. “This means for just the holiday travel period megabus.com alone has removed more than 90,000 cars from our nation’s interstates and highways and greatly reducing CO2 emissions.”

“Bus travel remains the fastest-growing mode of transportation in the country, and more people are choosing the bus this holiday season to get home and spend time with their loved ones,” added Alvich. “Even though the price of gas is falling, travelers like the affordable fares bus travel can provide and prefer to avoid paying increasing highway tolls, car wear and tear and the stress that can accompany driving on crowded roads. Instead, they’re relaxing with free Wi-Fi and power outlets on double-decker buses driven by our experienced, professional drivers.”

“My four children and I are riding megabus.com to visit family over the holidays not only because the cost to get us there was within my budget but because I get to avoid the stress of driving,” said megabus.com customer Shon James. “We love the comfort of the seats and being able to reserve them so we can sit together for our trip from Atlanta to Memphis. The free Wi-Fi and ability to charge our devices all the way there made the choice easy. We also love sitting on the upper deck because we feel like we’re in Great Britain!”

At full capacity. megabus.com double-decker buses provide 583.2 passenger miles per gallon; in contrast, single-occupant automobiles achieve 22 passenger miles per gallon. Average transit buses achieve 31.4 passenger MPG, airlines achieve 44 passenger MPG and commuter rail achieve 92.4 passenger MPG.

Megabus.com projects 240,000 Americans will be taking its double-decker buses to more than 120 cities across North America this holiday travel period – which is defined as December 23, 2014-January 2, 2015.

While megabus.com encourages customers to book online in advance for the best fares, studies such as the 2013 Year-in-Review of Intercity Bus Service by the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development of DePaul University have shown that even last minute fares can save customers up to 80 percent compared to other transportation modes. Cumulatively, bus travel saves consumers $1.2 billion annually compared to other modes of travel.

"Travelers are flocking to the bus. Not only for [the obvious benefits of] the low fares, but also to avoid the stress of flying and driving," said Joseph P. Schwieterman, Professor, School of Public Service and Director of Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. “The savings from bus travel proved remarkably robust, regardless of whether a consumer books in advance or waits until just a day before departure to buy a ticket.”

In addition to affordable fares, megabus.com offers customers state-of-the-art, green-certified double-decker buses with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, seat belts, restrooms and are wheelchair accessible.
